At AIA Chicago's 61st annual Designight event, held October 14, the Al Hilal Bank Office Tower was presented with a Distinguished Building Award Citation of Merit.
The tower consists of three large cubical masses, resembling stacked, shifted blocks. The building is located on Al Maryah Island in the northwestern region of Abu Dhabi. The facade, intended to convey a timeless, elegant image, is composed of a glass-and-aluminum curtain wall system with notched metal spandrels and vertical glass fins.
The elegance is what truly excited the jury. "The building is well-detailed," one juror said. "There is so much pattern-making going on; the fins unify it, but the architects showed subtle restraint."
