University of Illinois Selects Goettsch Partners and Mithun for New Student Life Project

11.20.2025

Goettsch Partners and Mithun have been selected by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to design the next major development within Ikenberry Commons—a new 600- to 800-bed residence hall that will include a 300-seat dining facility. The project will replace the existing Taft-Van Doren residence halls, addressing the university’s significant enrollment growth and supporting the goals of the Ikenberry Commons Strategic Plan.

The new facility is planned as a 160,000-square-foot building with an estimated total project cost of $180 million and scheduled completion by early 2030. The hall is expected to enhance the first-year student experience and establish a model for future residential development in this precinct of campus. The project will pursue LEED certification, contributing to the university’s growing portfolio of sustainable campus buildings.

Goettsch Partners is leading the overall team and will serve as Collaborating Design Architect and Architect of Record. Mithun will serve as the Lead Design Architect with integrated master planning, programming and interior design services. The project exceeds 40% participation by minority-, women- and veteran-owned business enterprises.
